Baltimore City is dedicating the full $152.5 million awarded in settlement with Cardinal Health to opioid remediation; $5 million will support Tuerk House at Exeter project in East Baltimore
Baltimore, Maryland (August 16, 2024) – Tuerk House, a healthcare delivery system serving the most disadvantaged community members in Greater Baltimore, announces it has been awarded $5 million from the City of Baltimore as a result of the City’s latest victory in ongoing opioid litigation. The City received a $152.5 million settlement with Cardinal Health following the Baltimore City Circuit Court’s August 15 ruling allowing the City’s case to proceed to trial. Tuerk House was one of several Baltimore substance use treatment centers and community organizations awarded funds, as the City is committed to using the settlement to help bring immediate resources to address the crisis.
Tuerk House will apply the $5 million to the development of Tuerk House at Exeter, a withdrawal management (detox) treatment facility that will include 22 beds for pregnant mothers, 22 beds for adolescents, 40 crisis stabilization beds, and a dental clinic. In December 2023, Tuerk House announced it had purchased a 44,000-square-foot warehouse located at 311 North Exeter Street in Baltimore. Since then, the organization has been actively raising funds to break ground on the $24 million demolition and renovation project led by RM Sovich Architecture. Tuerk House at Exeter is expected to be completed sometime in 2026.
